Following the training manual, the instructor first reviews the previous set of skills (not shown here). Only if the user shows mastery of those skills does this lesson proceed.
The instructor starts the interface and presses the "F10" key. The training
interface responds by showing a static interface.
In this state, the interface does not respond to button clicks, or anything else
other than the function keys.
The instructor points to McKay's picture and says "McKay sent 3 email messages,"
then points to Steve's picture and says "Steve sent 3 email messages." The
trainer continues through the partners until reaching "Tech sent 1 email
message."
Then, the trainer says "Tell me the number of emails sent by each partner."
If the user can correctly state the number of messages for each partner,
the instructor presses F10 again.
Once again, the instructor says "Tell me the number of emails sent by each
partner."
If the user can correctly perform this task 5 times, the instructor
reviews the motor tasks previously trained:
The instructor presses F5.
In this state, the interface will only respond to a click on the button for McKay.
The user clicks on the button for Mckay.
In this state, the interface will only respond to a click on the write button.
The user clicks on the write button.
In this state, the interface will only respond to a click on the send button.
The user clicks on the send button.
The interface starts a new trial.
After one or two successful trials of this previous skill,
the the instructor returns to the current skill by pressing F10 again.
The instructor continues this for three alternations of the previous skill and
the current skill, and then ends the session by asking the user to click the
"Shut Down" button.
At the beginning of the next session, the trainer asks the user to perform the task from the previous session. Only when the previous task has been mastered will new skills be taught.
The trainer presses F6.
In this state, the interface will only respond to clicks on the tech button.
The trainer says, "Follow the directions at the top of the screen for the
first two steps."
The user reads the instruction and clicks on the tech button.
In this state, the interface will only respond to clicks on the reply button.
The trainer says, "You will notice that the write has been replaced by reply.
This is because someone has sent you a message, so you reply to it."
The user reads the instruction and clicks on the reply button.
The trainer clicks send and the interface responds with a new trial.
As in the previous lesson, the trainer goes through a sequence of trials
for the current skill and trials for the previous skill and finally ends by
asking the user to click the Shut Down button.
At the beginning of the next session, the trainer asks the user to perform the task from the previous session. Only when the previous task has been mastered will new skills be taught.
The trainer presses F6.
The trainer says, "Follow the directions at the top of the screen
to complete all the steps for sending a message."
The user reads the instruction and clicks on the tech button.
The user reads the instruction and clicks on the reply button.
The user reads the instruction, says "windows are made of glass",
and clicks on the glass answer.
In this state, the computer will only respond to the send button.
The user reads the instruction and clicks on the send button.
The computer launches a new trial.
The training continues along the same lines as before until the user has shown mastery of the complete procedure.
The additional sessions in this sequence train the user to use the scroll bar for longer messages. Each session teaches just one aspect of scrolling, and no additional skills are ever taught until all previous skills have been mastered.
